I've been wanting to write this book for a very long time.
When I was five and my father was forty-two he had a "nervous breakdown" and was hospitalized. Our lives were never the same and I began to wonder, "What happened to my father? Why did he get sick? Why did he leave? What could I have done?"
I was twenty-six when my son, Jemal, was born. I had refused to go quietly to the waiting room with the other expectant fathers, but unceremoniously barged into the delivery room to complete the process that had begun 24 hours previously when my wife began labor.
Holding my son for the first time I made a vow that I would help create a healthier family than the one I grew up in. I would try and understand what causes the strain that leads to physical, emotional, and spiritual breakdown in so many men as we pass our fourth decade of life. I wanted to see if it were possible to maintain our health into our 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.
The success of my last two books, Male Menopause and Surviving Male Menopausewhich have now been translated into 15 languages-convinced me that I had learned some things in the 50 plus years since my father's fateful illness that could be of help to other fathers, sons, wives, and lovers.
